14 DAYS - Difficulty level: TOUGH
GROUPS OF 5 to 8 PEOPLE - ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE: LEKNES
Code circuit: LOFOT-14
This magnificent tour literally crosses the Lofotens from north to south! Because it sometimes takes us along the West coast and sometimes the East coast of the islands, we get to see a wide range of landscape and views. The wild and sometimes difficult terrain we cross reminds us of hiking in high altitude mountains even though we are constantly surrounded by sea. The astonishing landscapes are thrown into relief by the Midnight Sun of early summer which gives everything a magical atmosphere. To top it all, even though we are at latitudes where you would expect extreme cold, the temperatures remain mild due to the Gulf Stream that warms the coast all year round.
DAY to DAY
Day 1: Arrive and welcome at Leknes airport in the evening and transfer to Sandsletta in the north of the islands.
Day 2: Mountain hike to the top of Matmora and return to our accommodation in the afternoon when you will have the chance to try a traditional wood-fired Sauna.
Day 3: Hike to the top of Rundfjellet, one of the most beautiful summits of Austvågøya island. There is a 360° view from the summit including a fantastic view of the north of the islands and the Vesterålen archipelago.
Day 4: Transfer to our next accommodation (Brustranda) on the route from which we visit the fishing ports of Henningsvær, Kabelvåg and the small town of Svolvaer. In the afternoon, hike to the top of Hov (368 m), overlooking the nature reserve of Gimsøya island.
Day 5: Hike along the south coast of the islands facing the magnificent Vesterfjord dividing the islands from the Norwegian mainland. This unique route takes us to the top of Varden. Picnic before returning to Brustranda .
Day 6: Transfer to Unstad and climb to the top of Nonstinden. The views on this hike are both varied and very open over the ocean, of the lush valley of Unstad as well as the many lakes in the centre of the island of Vestvågøya. In the early evening we transfer and settle into our accommodation in Wtamsund for the next three nights.
Day 7: Hike to Steinetinden, the beautiful mountain overlooking our accomodation and the village of Stamsund.
Day 8: This hike, which is not particularly difficult, takes us through a wide variety of scenery until we reach two beautiful summits that overlook the plain of Leknes and the Vesterfjord (Guratinden and Bulitinden). The final climb is along a beautiful ridge that overlooks the town of Leknes on the right and the magnificent Vestfjord on the left.
Day 9: Transfer to Fredvang. At the end of the morning leave for Kvalvika (Whale Beach). This site is impressive both for its isolation and the black granite cliffs that surround it. Although this area was occupied by a fishing family until the nineteenth century, all that now remains is a few scattered ruins on the heath. Return along the ridge.
Day 10: This hike takes us up to the top of Volandstinden which overlooks the village of Fredvang and the Torsfjorden. The summit offers a magnificent view over the bay of Flakstad and the stretch of sea that separates the islands of Flakstadøya and Moskenesøya.
Day 11: In the morning leave for Sørvågen in the south of the islands where we will stay for the last four nights. In the afternoon we climb to the top of Tindstinden which is a short but mountainous hike. There is a magnificent view over the neighbouring valleys and fish eagles nest near the summit…
Day 12: This day is spent fishing in the Vesterfjord which divides the islands from the Norwegian mainland. We try our luck at cod fishing. In the evening we cook our catch back at our lodgings.
Day 13: Long hike to the top of Munkan opposite the highest summit in the Lofoten Islands (Hermanndalstinden – 1,029 m). This is a very enjoyable hike. Return via a ridge giving unbroken views of the southern tip which is the wildest, most mountainous area of the Lofoten islands.
Day 14: Transfer to Leknes Airport in the morning and return to France.
